Kargopol: through the thicket, without a hint ... to the fairy tale?

Well, and who for the SUV that import holds, so it is better not to risk it. By rail, Moscow-Arkhangelsk to the station Nyandoma and there are 80 kilometers by bus.
And here he is -

Kargopol city, ah, the city is small!
Yes, my heart does not order to forget it.

And how can you forget this northern tale? Here it becomes everything in its place! If a fairy tale, then ... How is it without a toy? After all, the toy, in itself, is a small piece of the fairy-tale world. The one that each of us comes up with as a child, being at the same time a storyteller, and most importantly, of course, a positive, protagonist.

But, sooner or later, all good things end, other adult times begin, and the tale remains somewhere there, behind, where it’s not very common to look around. And when, if everything is necessary, forward, forward, behind the happiness and various material, mainly, goods running away somewhere beyond the horizon? That's how we live. As a rule and for the most part.

And in Kargopol - no. They figured pepper to nose and stayed in a fairy tale. Why look somewhere out there, if that's it. Around. Beside.

True, not so long ago they have established this order. Yes, and ... To be honest, not from a good life, all of this was initially twisted.

In the second half of the nineteenth, XIX century, it was. You can even say, closer to its logical conclusion. In the 80−90-ies. Kargopol peasants lived for themselves, lived ... Here, only if it can be said that they “did not hurt”, then with a great stretch. No, that's how they are. Raised rye, vegetables, kept cattle. Only ... North. What is highly productive agriculture here? Not to fat. Well, if you feed yourself from that farm you get. And commodity production everywhere, including in post-reform Russia, requires some pretty penny.

Therefore, in the Russian North, the peasants, in their free time from field work, were necessarily engaged in some extra income. Who is a carpenter, who went into the city on a fishing job. And in the villages of the Panfilov volost of the Kargopol district, the people thought, thought ... Scratched the back of the head with a strongly tanned fender, and decided to take up pottery production. Not to the detriment, of course, of agriculture. And what, clay is in vicinities and Grinev, and Pechnikov, and Tokarev, and some other villages.

No sooner said than done. They took the clay where in the ravine so that it was fatter than the river, in which there was a lot of sand, they dried it in the oven, pushed it to the state of powder. Then some water was added and kneaded. Eka nevidal. The usual thing. The dough is almost the same every day ... And the clay is the same. How to get behind the hands - that's all. For modeling - ready. You can sit behind a hand made wooden potter's wheel.

The statistical reporting of the end of the year before last, the beginning of the last century did not keep us specific names, but it accurately recorded that in 1902 43 people were engaged in home-made pottery in the Panfilov volost. The assortment of dishes produced by them of the most different sizes and shapes was very wide. Here and pots, and pots, and blades, and rukomoi, and pots, and latki. The annual earnings of each of the potters was 10−15 rubles. Considering that the average price of pottery fluctuated around 5–10 kopecks, during the winter at least 10 thousand units of various pottery were made in the vicinity of Kargopol. But outside the county she almost did not leave. It was sold in the nearest villages, at local fairs, in Kargopol itself.

And next to the dishes on the market square there was a toy. The economy should be economical. And the production is efficient and, preferably, waste-free. Long before the pillars of the economics of developed socialism, the Kargopol potters knew this. If a fraction of the already prepared and mixed clay is left, from which it makes no sense to make a wrist or a hand, why shouldn't it be used?

Can! Molded torso head. Separately skirt bell. Attach the second to the first. And here - two small "sausages". These are hands. They bent them up and stuck to the body. Everything. Kargopol lady is ready. And if anything remains, it is still possible to mold and the ringing-voiced choke-whistle so widespread in the province and so beloved by children.

The revenue from that toy is a trifle. Even on the market day. But - a competent marketing move. What boy or girl will pass by, will not catch the eye, will not pull Dad's hand - “Buy ... Buy a duck!”. And there, you see, to it or the lady will be added what kind of korchaga or krink. Already approached the pottery row, how can you not remember that something in the time that has passed since the last auction, already managed to break up ?!

Yes, and you can take your child's work, so as not to interfere, not be confused at hand, while you build up on the potter's wheel of several plaits - “aunts” - the vessel wall. I threw a small piece of clay - "Sculpt!". And they are happy. They try. Then, by the toy itself, it is easy to determine - and who made it?

Sazhen, arshin, vershok. Old Russian measures of length, derived from a particular part of the body. But if all of them have long gone, then in the manufacture of toys not only was, and now there is such a measure. Peculiar dimensional toy standard. Palm. Well, and the children's palm, she, whatever one may say, is less female or, moreover, man's. In addition, a man, as a rule, better manages the shape of a toy, a woman - a color. Therefore, if you look closely, you can immediately understand who put his hand to this particular “mistress”.

So that the buyer does not pass by, caught the product with a look and became interested, somehow it is necessary to make the toy brighter. And because it was covered with engobe - liquid clay, with lime mixed with it. Or made "obvarnoy." The product, which had just been taken out of the furnace after burning, was immediately dipped into a flour mash made of pea or oatmeal, which, boiling on hot clay, covered it with original dark stains.

But neither the engobe nor the “obvar” could be compared with the painting for which the natural dyes that were at hand were used. To begin with, the toy was whitened with chalk diluted in milk. After that, furnace soot or colored clay were used. Sometimes the one and the other. And the toy became colored. But not bright. What color saturation from soot, clay or chalk?

It is now - temperament or gouache on glue give a completely different calico, while leaving the traditional form of the toy itself, as well as its ornament and color scheme, in which only a few colors prevail. By itself, white. The one that used to give chalk. Black, as the memory of soot. And also - green, red, yellow - ocher. And these colors are not just like that. Each of them carries an ancient semantic load, as a pagan echo of our distant ancestors. Black is a symbol of the earth, white is the truth and good, green is life, red is power, glory, fire, beauty and health.

Different times were at the Kargopol toys. In the 50s of the last century, Ulyana Babkina alone molded her in the abandoned village of Grinyovo. But no matter what the storms and winds rustled around the country, no matter how hard and difficult it was, and not faded fishing. And the memory of the fairy tale and the fairy tale itself remained with us. Come on. Take a look and make sure.

What to watch? That's what the toy is made by the master to give it in good hands. Are we bad? Take it. Take it with you. So that in your house there was not only a piece of a fairy tale, but also a good memory of a small northern town, which is always ready to cordially share with the visitors its warmth.
