How to prepare for an ... earthquake?

Modern science, unfortunately, still cannot predict the time of earthquake occurrence, but life around itself sometimes makes us understand that danger is approaching. Proved that some time before the earthquake animals start to worry and behave unusually:

  • dogs and cats - 2 days before the first aftershocks;
  • hens - from 1 to 3 days;
  • mice and rats - from 1 to 15 days;
  • fish - from several hours to 10 days;
  • pigeons - up to 1 day.

Richter scale identifies the following types of earthquake power:

  • up to 2 points - tremors are not felt by people;
  • 2 points - it is felt only on the upper floors of high-rise buildings;
  • 3 points - the suspended objects in the houses begin to swing, windows are ringing in the windows;
  • 4 points - tremors are felt on the street, ripples appear on the surface of water bodies;
  • 5 points - plaster cracks, glass breaks, people lose their balance when walking;
  • 6 points - dilapidated buildings collapse, furniture breaks down, it is difficult for a person to stand on his feet;
  • 7 points - panic begins, cracks in the ground appear, serious damage, rupture of pipelines under the ground;
  • 8 points - roads are destroyed, landslides appear, most of the buildings are destroyed;
  • 9 points - the complete destruction of buildings and structures, objects fly in the air, the movement of rocks begins.

Of course, to meet an earthquake of 7 or more points fully armed is impossible, but if you live in an area prone to this natural disaster, then take some measures before a small-scale earthquake worth:

  • attach furniture to walls and floors;
  • identify possible routes to the shelter;
  • mark the places where a fire may occur and keep flammable substances away from them;
  • buy a fire extinguisher and learn how to use it;
  • prepare water and food supplies and periodically update them;
  • Prepare a first aid kit with the necessary means for first aid;
  • near the door you can leave a backpack or bag with warm clothes, a sleeping bag, a flashlight, food and water.

When a small earthquake occurs You can use the following recommendations:

  • hide under a strong table near the bearing walls to avoid injuries when falling chandeliers, cornices, interior walls;
  • keep away from electrical appliances and glasses;
  • do not use a lighter and matches, immediately extinguish any source of fire;
  • Do not go out on balconies and loggias;
  • do not use the elevator;
  • turn off the gas, plumbing, electricity;
  • if you are on the street, you should only walk on foot, avoiding narrow streets and not approaching dangerous objects (wires, pipes, glasses).

The most main rule in the event of any disaster - do not panic and remain calm.
